I’m a psychologist who knows only too well how difficult life can be when you worry about everything or spend your energy pleasing others.
There was a time that I worried far too much.
If I did something that I thought others would not like or I felt wasn’t “good enough” I would get a knot in my stomach and worry like crazy.
I was a people pleaser and a perfectionist, a “nice guy”. I desperately worried that if I didn’t please others, or fix their problems, they would reject me.
I often placed other’s needs ahead of my own because I was so busy trying to ensure people liked me or wouldn’t be disappointed with me.
It often took me what seemed like forever to start or complete tasks the “right way” because I wanted to be sure everything was “perfect”.
I learned that being “a people pleaser” and perfectionist led to exhaustion, impacted my work-life-balance, and strained some of my relationships.
With a lot of practice, I learned strategies to challenge my worries and discovered how to deepen connections with others without neglecting my own needs.
