Becoming a Psychologist

My first career was in music. I played the piano and sang in recording studios with pop, jazz and R&B bands for many years.
I eventually decided to become a psychologist and have never looked back.
It’s incredibly rewarding to see my clients get relief from their worries, improve their relationships, and feel better about themselves.
My Interest in Treating Anxiety
As a young adult in graduate school, I worried a lot. I was “Mr. Nice Guy,” Anxious that people wouldn’t like me, I did what I could to please people. I tried to do everything “right.”
I over-booked myself all the time, hoping I would get my needs met.
While I thought there were “Good Reasons” to act this way, I often didn’t get what I needed with others.
I’m happy to report that with a lot of work, I learned strategies to challenge my fears and worries. I discovered how to deepen connections with others while getting what I need.
Professional Experience as a Psychologist
I’ve been working in the field of clinical psychology since 1995. I’ve held numerous leadership and psychologist positions in hospitals in Calgary and Vancouver.
I have trained psychology students and supervised other psychologists in the practice of psychology.
For 7 years I was the Head of the Psychology Department for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. In this role, I oversaw and supervised the professional practice of the psychologists working in hospitals and health centers in the health region.
Currently, in addition to my therapy private practice, I’m a Psychologist at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia.
